What are dermal fillers?

As our skin ages, it tends to lose its natural elasticity and facial lines become more visible. Other factors such as sun exposure, genetics and way of life also affect our skin and body. Dermal fillers are injectables which can help replace lost facial volume, smooth out facial lines and enhance facial contour. One of the most important ingredients in these gel-like substances is Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which plays a major role in keeping our skin volumized and smooth. One of the main benefits of using HA fillers is that they can be dissolved using a solution called Hyaluronidase if you do not like the results after the treatment.

How does dermal fillers work?

This procedure will be done by your provider by using a small injectable filler which has a tiny needle. The filler will then be then injected into targeted areas of your skin, to boost the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid. Just 1 gram of Hyaluronic Acid will hold up to 6 litres of water by drawing in moisture from air, thus helping your skin in keeping it moisturized. The dermal fillers will help in volumizing your face and smooth out facial lines by plumping the skin and working in place of lost collagen.

What to expect before treatment?

During your consultation, your medical professional will examine your facial structure and mark specific points on your face to get a clear idea on the appropriate areas that are to be injected during the treatment. Your treatment goals, medical history, and side effects from the treatment will be discussed too. This is the reason they are famously known as - the lunchtime cosmetic procedures! However, a topical numbing cream or an ice pack will be applied if you are more prone to pain. Do not apply any makeup before the treatment, The area that is to be treated will be cleaned with an antibacterial agent before injecting. More than one filler may be required depending on your treatment goals and area of treatment. Your medical professional will clean out the markings after the procedure, and slightly massage the treated area to reduce any swelling.

Treatment Post-Care

Immediate results can be seen in majority of the cases after dermal fillers treatment. These results can last anywhere from six to twelve months after the session, before the body starts to absorb the HA fillers. However, more than one procedure is needed to obtain optimal results. Your doctor will discuss a treatment timeline that will help you reach and maintain your treatment goals. Since this is a minimally invasive procedure, you can resume your daily activities immediately, but keep in mind to avoid intense physical activities and other facial treatments for 24-48 hrs after the procedure. Stay hydrated and gently massage any lumps with clean hands. Avoid applying makeup for the first 24 hours after treatment and apply an ice pack if you notice any swelling or bruising.
