Lips Fillers: What to Expect, Types, Benefits & Side Effects

Lip filler is one of the most popular non-invasive treatments, and one of the most popular areas for filler injection among patients is the lip area. Lip fillers consist of synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA) — HA is a natural substance in your body. Unfortunately, naturally occurring hyaluronic acid disappears as you age and due to prolonged exposure to sunlight, contributing to the development of wrinkles and volume loss.
Lip fillers are the ideal way to restore or add volume and plumpness to the lips. These injectable semi-permanent solutions are used on lips to restore their flexibility, volume, or shape. Lip fillers can be used in different areas around the mouth including:
  • The outline of the lips
  • The area between the upper and lower lips
  • Marionette lines
  • Vermillion border
  • Perioral lines
  • Cupid’s bow.

What To Expect During and After Treatment

Lip filler treatment is a quick and easy procedure that takes very little time. This minimally invasive procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. Before the procedure, your practitioner will apply lidocaine or a similar numbing cream to the area, to alleviate pain. You may also be asked to apply ice to your lips while you wait 15 minutes for the numbing agent to take effect. The injections used during the lip filler procedure consist of very thin needles and only cause slight pinching sensation with some pressure, while the practitioner inserts it into your lips.

After the procedure, you will notice some swelling at the injection site and at the corners of your lips. Your lips might also appear overfilled as the injections start to form and fill out. This occurs due to the moisture-retentive capabilities of the fillers. However, your lips will recover, and results will improve over the following weeks.

Types of Lip Fillers

Some of the most common types of lip fillers that help in achieving fuller lips and enhance their overall appearance include hyaluronic acid, perlane/restylane, radiesse, juvederm, bio-alcamid, porcine collagen, and human collagen.

Side-Effects of Lip Fillers

Your healthcare practitioner will discuss all possible side effects of the treatment during your initial consultation. Lip filler side effects can occur within hours, days, or weeks of receiving the injections. Common side effects include itching, swelling, soreness, redness, and rash. These symptoms should subside within two weeks after the procedure. You should contact your healthcare practitioner if these symptoms seem to get worse you or if you develop a fever.
